So you've probably heard of a Cake Smash by now, also referred to as 'Trash & Splash'. Its an American theme and quickly found its way over to the UK a few years back, the cake smash seems to be super popular in and around Nottingham.
Welllll, What is it?
Basically when baby turns one we photograph them trashing their first ever birthday cake, sounds horrifically messy right? And yeah it totally is, but a cake smash is SO much fun for the little ones. Think of it as quite like a bit of sensory fun, new feels, new taste and smells, lots of sticky mess!
So why choose a cake smash / 1st Birthday shoot anyway?
Unlike most other gifts your baby will greatly receive on their first birthday, 1st birthday photography is something you'll keep forever. I mean the musical, flashing all singing all dancing school bus is great fun for now, but its not something you'll store away as a great meaningful memory reminding you of your baby's first birthday the way you want to remember it. But photography you will, photography is an investment in memories, something fun to do for now AND something you'll gladly want to look back on when this stage in your life has been and gone.
But what makes MY cake smashes different from the rest, you ask ..
Staying true to my brand ethos, my cake smashes are all very natural and very simple. You'll have seen lots with the brightly coloured props, balloons, bunting and the rest and whilst they look awesome, they just don't quite fit with my 'why'.
I always advise keeping things minimal, less is more. Maybe adding in one colour, but my main focus is always the baby & the reason your choosing to capture your baby's first ever birthday. So the images you walk away with are always beautifully timeless.
Every part of the 1st Birthday Photography sessions are tailored around documenting this huge milestone in your babies life. I like to start with a few family photos, I mean lets not forget this is about you too, you also made it through babies first year. I then move on to some portraits of just baby, I have a collection of hand made wooden toys, a wardrobe of carefully hand picked outfits and a beautiful white natural light studio, ensuring you have a wonderful experience from start to finish.
But don't worry if a cake smash is not for you and the mess makes you freak out a little, an ordinary 1st birthday portrait session may be more your thing. Focusing solely on the detail of your baby about to turn toddler, having a play around and showing off their little character, there are still some beautiful portraits to capture and help mark your babies biggest milestone yet.
You'll never regret the photos you did take, only ever the ones you didn't.
