What To Wear For Your Family Photography Session
One of the most frequently asked questions I get following a booking is 'What do we wear for our family photos' and I totally get it, picking an outfit for photos you intend to hang on your walls for years to come is a big deal and a decision not to be taken lightly.
I've put together 5 top tips to help when choosing what to wear for your family portraits, in the studio and out on the field.
1. Plain and simple is key. We intend these images to hang proudly on your walls or in photo albums for years and years to come, simple is powerful. Keeping everything to a minimum will ensure you don't come to despise what you chose to wear in the future. Let the focus be on the connection and emotion in the image, not the outfit your wearing. Plain white tops, shirts, jumpers or pale pastel colours work perfectly.
2. Avoid heavy patterns or logos. We don't want to be distracted by over the top patterns or logos that will very quickly date. Fashion comes and goes all too fast and we all have those old photographs stored away at home where our parents dressed us in the most ridiculous outfits, lets not carry on that trend!
3. Minimalistic hair and makeup. Whilst the natural thing to do is doll yourself up for the occasion, actually minimal hair and make up speaks volumes, being yourself is the most beautiful thing you could wear so I always advise sticking to your normal day to day hair and make up and try not to over do it.
4. Dress the family as if you were dressing one person. The best bit of advice I've maybe ever heard when it comes to family photography. Instead of dressing each individual person stick to one or two main colour schemes and dress for one person, now I don't mean matching outfits but similar colours that will compliment each other and could be worn together. This way no one will clash and no one will stick out, think white shirts, white summer dresses, cream jumpers with creamy shirts or t-shirts, you get the idea.
5. Most importantly be yourself, wear your confidence and feel comfortable in your own skin. We're capturing your personal family memories, the little bits that make your family exactly who they are. Let that stand out in your photographs.
