Top 5 Tips For Taking A 6 Month Old Abroad
I'll just say it, holidays can be stressful. I mean with all the 'To Do' lists, what to pack lists, the holiday shop ,Insurance, finding passports in that over cluttered cupboard, tidying every inch of the house before you leave (I mean that can't just be me right?) There is no denying the fact that no matter how organised you think you're going to be, you'll still be running around the house like a crazy mad person the few days leading up to your holiday. Every. Single. Time. Now add a baby in to the mix, yep - a baby under 1 years old, who already comes with a trailer of 'stuff' required on a day to day basis.
So, to make life that tiny little bit easier I've made a list (My favourite thing to do). A list of the top 5 things that we found, made life so much easier when taking my nephew away this year on his first ever holiday!
* Pre-order milk, nappies and swim nappies at the airport ahead of your holiday for collection when you arrive. This way these essential items aren't actually counted in your luggage meaning you don't have to forfit that new pair of shoes you bought for your holidays!
* The brand 'DOT DOT' are the Spanish Pampers, This will probably vary place to place but useful to know if your traveling to Spain and need to nip out for a few extra nappies!
* Less is definitely more when packing for baby. Its so easy to get carried away buying all these amazing little summery outfits and vests but realistically they just won't wear them and most of the outfits we had for my nephew whilst they looked practical just weren't for the heat we were in. We found that 99% of the time Finn was either naked or just in a nappy (In the shade of course with cream on). A couple of plain over sized t-shirts (few sizes too big so they don't cling) were perfect for throwing on around the day and also for sleeping in with a nappy at night. The UV swimsuits another big must! Of course worn with suncream but a lot of baby is covered so less areas are exposed to the sun. Mothercare, F&F clothing and even George are good places to look for these.
* Snoozeshade - This was one of those random buys that my mum found when looking for a buggy parasol yet ended up being the most useful thing we took away with us. Instead of the normal buggy umbrellas that you end up moving around constantly trying to find the shade over baby which only ever covers half anyway, not to mention big and clunky and sticks out a mile from your pushchair, this is a super slick black out blind that folds away in to a little packet quite like an old school rain coat. The snoozeshade takes up absolutely no space in your case, winner! And covers the whole of the pushchair from the hood to the foot stool at the bottom. Its also black out which was perfect for nap times whilst we were out and about! Here is the link to the one we have from Mothercare - £19.99 and fits over most style pushchairs and strollers - http://www.mothercare.com/snoozeshade---the-blackout-blind-for-prams-and-pushchairs-upf50/303869.html
* If baby is bottle fed, try them on a beaker ahead of the holiday to get them used to it. Sometimes takes a few goes transitioning from a bottle to a beaker, its obviously important they get lots of fluids in the heat so trying them with something brand new when you need them to drink lots isn't the best idea. Lots of practice before you go and thats one less thing to worry about!
There you go, our tried and tested top 5 tips for taking a 6 month old abroad. Hopefully these little pointers will help take that pre holiday stress away just a little when getting prepared for your trip! Of course these tips that worked for us may not work for everyone and anything your unsure about you should do your own research accordingly.
Happy Holidays!
